How to Find Your Ideal Client (Without Guessing)
By Daniel Pope, founder of Be Known - helping businesses market since 2018
Short answer
To find your ideal client, look at your past customers and pick the ones who got the best results, paid easily and were enjoyable to work with. Find what they have in common - situation, problem, trigger and language - and write that down as your ideal customer profile. If you're new, interview 5-10 people in your target market first.
Step by step
- List your last 10-20 clients.
- Mark the best by results, ease of payment and enjoyment.
- Note what the best ones have in common.
- Ask 3-5 of them why they hired you and what almost stopped them.
- Write the pattern as an ideal customer profile.
If you have no clients yet
Interview people you'd like to serve. Ask about their biggest frustration, what they've tried and what they'd pay to fix it. Don't pitch - just learn their words.

What's the difference between a target market and an ideal client?
Your target market is the broad group. Your ideal client is the specific person inside it you serve best.
